Notice of Motion Passed in a full council meeting

On 31 October 2011 at a full Council Meeting for the eThekwini Municipality, I councillor Lyndal Singh of the Minority Front put forward a notice of motion on High Electricity and Water Tariffs, and it was passed.

What would this mean now for the residents of eThekwini? Every three months the municipality does a electricity meter reading and when they are not doing this they charge customers an estimated charge. This causes a problem as if they under estimate your electricity usage then when they do a meter reading your bill becomes extremely high and what makes it worse is if you a pensioner who collects an amount of R1140 and your bill comes more than what you collect.

Now the Municipality will set up a toll free number were residents can call monthly and give the meter readings to the municipality and be charged for what they use this will help people to budget them selves.
The council will all embark on a city wide education campaign to inform residents on how to save water and electricity. So I urge residents when this toll free number becomes available they must take full advantage of this service that will be offered by the municipality as it will benefit them.

We live in a world where cost of living is extremely high and by trying to ease the expenses that community has to endure, it provides a better lifestyle for even those that are less fortunate

Cllr Lyndal Singh encourages the community to donate blood.

Pictured: Minority Front Cllr. E L Singh, Cllr Bradley Singh and MF Volunteers.

You can help….  KZN is currently sitting on 2 day’s blood stock.

The Minority Front urges everyone to donate a unit of this “precious gift of life”. One must develop a habit of donating blood in order that South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has sufficient blood stock to ensure that in cases of emergency quality blood is always available for needy patients. Kwa-Zulu Natal is currently sitting on 2 day’s blood stock. We aim to maintain a stock level of 5 days, with 3000 units collected per day to meet the demand. Currently we are experiencing difficulty achieving this, which has been mainly due to the fact the school and university drives are not possible from September onwards as students are busy with exams, followed by a short break and a very intensive final quarter, said Cllr Lyndal Singh.

Cllr Lyndal Singh therefore urges all blood donors, to make a conscious effort to donate blood. Your one unit of blood can save up to three lives. This is also a plea to all South Africans who meets the minimum requirements to also commit to donating blood.

Minimum Requirements to be a donor:

·         Be between the age of 16 – 65 years

·         Weigh more than 50kgs

·         Be in good health

·         Live a sexually safe lifestyle.

If you are a current blood donor please ensure you continue to donate regularly. If you are not a blood donor the Minority Front urges you to take the first step to save lives by visiting your nearest blood donor centre today! Be a hero, it’s in your BLOOD.

For more information, please visit us the South African National Blood Services website on: www.SANBS.org..za or call them directly on: 0800 11 90 31. You can also visit the Blood Donor Centre at the Phoenix Plaza.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor

September as we know is Arbor Month but in December South Africa and the city of Durban will be home to the entire world as members from all parts of the work descend upon our humble abode for the COP 17. This year Durban will be alive as the ICC becomes the life of the meeting. South Africa has already been hosts in the Football World Cup, the ICC inaugural 20/20 tournament and many other major events. As a community leader I would just like to urge all to take a stand and make a difference for our environment. We as people of Durban should be proud that our city has been chosen to host such a prestigious event, which shows the trust and faith that the world has of our city so let's plant a tree and save our environment and everyone in durban can become a part of COP 17.

Kind Regards

Notice of Motion was passed this was my motion so all the best to the Woman of Durban

Dear Editor

At the eThekwini Municipality's full Council Meeting that was held on the 27 September 2011, I would like to place on record that the notice of motion from the Minority Front for women empowerment has been passed.

This means that all women in Durban will be able to acquire knowledge on how to tender for municipal contracts. The motion has also stipulated that an extensive program will be carried out for them to receive development skills.

I would personally like to thank all councillors that supported this motion. Now it shows that women will have an equal chance to be good entrepreneurs and this motion will help young women who have come from previously disadvantage backgrounds to grow and achieve success.

As a young female Councillor in the municipality, I, myself know the challenges the women of Durban are faced with that's why this motion was placed on the council agenda. This is a victory to all women of Durban especially with the rate of unemployment so high. As women, we must all stand together and stand tall so we can fight battles that diminish us. Now that the motion has been passed, its beneficial in a million ways.

So I would like to take this opportunity to encourage the women in Durban to take full advantage of this as it will benefit you and this will definitely encourage you in becoming Dynamic business women.

Kind Regards

Cllr Lyndal Singh Assist Residents after Contractors damage Sewer Manhole in Heatbury Uint 7 Phoenix.

Disgusting and putrid smells from a burst sewage pipe has left one resident of Heathbury Place in an angry uproar.

Jugades Naidoo, the complainant, claimed that the vacant land next to his property has recently been dug for the landscaping for a new block of flats and that the construction workers dug too wide and as a result cut the sewage pipe on his property.

"During the course of the day the filthy water flows into the open land and you can see the debris of toilet paper in the sand. The smell is horrendous and the water is causing mosquitoes to breed", Naidoo said.

Naidoo also claimed that he had told the contractors not to get to close to his property and alleged that they did not listen.

He continued saying that he finally had enough and contacted the Minority Front Councillor Lyndal Singh to investigate the matter and sort out the problem as soon as possible.
Cllr Lyndal Singh said " This open sewer manhole is a health risk and the council should sort it out immediately however with the strike it will take longer but will get fixed, caution must be taken by contractors working in the area not to damage council infer structure. However the worst thing is when they damage infer structure and just leave it without fixing the problem, this type off behaviour will not be tolerated". said cllr Lyndal Singh.
